We've all been told. We all know. We have no excuses.
So what did you do to not destroy the planet?
This has been more in my mind lately because of the news on Insects, the ongoing lack of progress on global warming, and everything going wrong in politics lately - i’ve been dismayed by brexit.
But it came to me that I have no excuses, we have all been told about Global Warming, and haven’t done much.
We all know about organic foods, and the global damage of massive scale agricultural meat production.
We perhaps don’t know so much about the end of the hydrocarbon energy peak - but we try not to think about it.
But overall what will we tell our grandchildren?
We didn’t know - isn’t an excuse - we all know so much because of the internet. It is in the news, it is in politics, there are many liars saying anything to keep the oil business going in the face of global waring. Are we going to say we were lied to? - I don’t think it will wash. We all know about global warning, pesticides and herbicides, and the lies politicians tell to keep the money and power. - We have no excuses.
So what can we do? (And am I missing anything big?)
Change to solar/wind/renewable electricity if available
Save electricity - all LED bulbs (this should have happened by now), Do the usual stuff., save some money, use less electricity.
Switch from gas cooking and heating to electric on the renewable electricity
Eat much less meat - or go vegetarian - the costs of meat production are massive, and you save money, and get healthier.
Eat organic - pesticides and herbicides are destroying biodiversity on earth. Will agriculture work if we kill all the arthropods that help make our soil?
Move to electric transport - make you next car electric, make you second car a bicycle or electric bicycle. Save money and get healthier.
Buy less, Use less - be a little more Mr Money Mustache - save money and be more secure financially. Buy less crap that doesn’t make us happy.
So how am I and my family doing?
Since moving to CA, I am confused by the PG&E bill, and don’t know how renewable our electricity is. When in TX we had green mountain energy for years. - So I need to work this out.
We are renting a new place with a real mix of bulbs - I need to fix this.
The rental house has gas cooking and heating and hot water I think - so that its a problem. - Not sure what the landlord will think.
I love meat -(My favorite food is a roast beef Sunday lunch) - this will have to change, and be an emotionally tough thing for me.
Eat Organic - food is expensive in CA, and so we usually just focus on that - but this should be an easy change that we wouldn’t emotionally notice.
I have always bicycled to work, and our one car is a prius. I am planning on making our next car electric, perhaps in a few years - I think this is on track.
Moving has thrown me off track a bit - need to make progress here too.
SO I AM FAILING with a grade of about 1 in 7. I have to improve if I don’t want to live in shame from now on.
