On Children
Children are some of the hardest working people in our society.
We drop them off at school and then go to work. They work all day, and then do "after school", and then we make them do 3 hours of homework a night. In Texas they got rid of recess, they reduced sports, they test the children. A lot.
The children are all taking as many AP classes as possible, because the SAT is too easy.
They are learning things that didn't exist when I was in school. We teach high schoolers how to sequence genomes and edit them using CRISPR. We are teaching them data science and machine learning. Making them program javascript games and websites.
They still write essays, but they also make movies better than hollywood from 30 years ago - for class.
They know that a regular degree is not enough, and are aiming for the advanced credentials.
They take on the NRA because we adults don't.
Most of all, they believe us and trust us, and do as we said, not as we did. They have been taught to new the best people they can, and we can’t let them down in the adult world. They are our better selves, and we must support them to be better than us in the future.
We must leave a better world for them.
